TOP TIP: Arrive In Style with Lake Como Transfers

I’m ready to reveal my top tip for how to travel to Lake Como in style.

When I was researching routes from Milan Malpensa airport to Lake Como, it became clear this was a route taken regularly by people with large budgets. Yes, there are trains and buses, but they aren’t particularly direct to the main tourist towns in the centre of the lake. The simplest way to travel – by car. I decided to test out one of the transfer services on offer, to find out if it was worth splashing the cash.

I booked my transfer with Lake Como Transfers – a company with an impressive set of Trip Advisor reviews. In fact, they’re rated number one of things to do in Menaggio. The email exchange with Jenny on the concierge team was friendly, and although I was booking just a few days before my trip, they had availability and my transfer was booked with ease. With everything confirmed, I was informed my driver would be waiting at the airport with a sign.

I was met in arrivals around 6.30pm by Lorenzo, a young, impeccably dressed Italian holding a sign saying “Mrs Chloe”! He wore a suit and instantly reached for my luggage and wheeled it out of the terminal. He was very welcoming and spoke perfect English.

I waited outside while he brought a shiny silver Mercedes around, and within five minutes we were on our way. The car was clean and extremely comfortable with huge amounts of leg room (not that I needed it!). There were even complimentary bottles of water and sweets provided in the back.

The transfer to Menaggio took around 1 hour and 20 minutes. Once off the main highways from the airport, the scenery was incredible – with breath-taking views of the lake, small picturesque towns and the Alps all popping into view. Not to mention – the sun was setting and illuminating everything beautifully.

I organised my trip at the last minute so had several days ahead with few plans. I chatted to Lorenzo for much of the journey and received plenty of excellent local knowledge – from where to find the best pizza and gelato, to what it was like to grow up in the area. My favourite tale though – hearing all about Lorenzo’s experience driving the Top Gear team including Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond around when they were filming a few years ago!

I arrived at my final destination feeling relaxed and pleased I’d booked the service. If you’re kicking off the holiday of a lifetime, or just want to arrive in style, this is definitely the way to do it.

The transfer from Milan Malpensa Airport to Menaggio costs 160 EUR by car, or 180 EUR by minivan. Find out more here.
