Cancel that plane ticket! All these places are right here in England so you really can swap the Caribbean for the Scilly Isles, Lake Como for Windemere and the Twelve Apostles for The Needles.
After a rather poor excuse of a Summer last year, a lot of people were excited to leave our shores behind in favour of sunshine-drenched holiday spots. People in the street were muttering “why do we choose to live here anyway?” Ok, I might even have said it myself when I got caught in not one, but TWO torrential downpours in a day that was supposed to be ‘summer’.
But don’t be too hasty. I know we can’t ALWAYS guarantee the weather here, but we do have a heap of utterly amazing places to explore right on our doorstep. In fact plenty compare to the most popular holiday destinations.
I’m half way through my first year as a Visit England ambassador (a campaign I’m absolutely loving) and as a result I’ve spent hours Googling places in my home country. I’m trying to narrow down the places I really want to visit as part of the ambassadorship, but it has been SUCH a struggle to choose. So in no particular order, here are some amazing places here in England that truly stand up against those abroad. Don’t be too hasty jetting off… unless it’s to Cornwall. Then you’re allowed!
Forget travelling abroad, all these places are right here at home!
Lake Windemere, Lake District Vs Lake Como, Italy
I’ve visited Lake Como and it was peaceful, serene and totally dreamy. My latest UK exploration took me to the Lake District and yes, it had the same dreamy quality. I still can’t believe it took me 31 years to visit!

Durdle Door, Dorset VS Arch Rock, California, USA
There are plenty of rock arches around the world, but our Durdle Door on the Jurassic Coast is pretty epic. If you get the weather right, it even beats California’s Arch Rock!

Heacham, Norfolk VS Provence, France
The bright flash of purple from the lavender fields has been enticing people to Provence for years, but it turns out there are some gorgeous places to get your purple fix right here, including Heacham in Norfolk.
