From volcano hikes and stunning natural pools to world-class parks and delicious food, these are the top things to do in Tenerife.
The Canary Islands are a favourite region of mine. Ideal for family holidays, these sunshine-filled isles offer summer holiday vibes all year round.
Tenerife is one of the most popular islands in the Canaries. With its epic volcanic landscapes, colourful towns and a relaxed island charm, it’s somewhere you’re guaranteed to fall in love with.
I’ve always appreciated the fact that no matter what you’re interested in, there’s something you’ll enjoy! Whether you’re visiting for some crazy adventures, for wildlife encounters, to immerse yourself in nature or relax by a pool, you’ll be in your element.

10 Unique Things To Do In Tenerife
Walk on the wild side at Loro Parque
If you love animals, you’ve simply got to visit Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz. This is more than a zoo, it’s a beautifully designed space for animals, and one of the best family attractions in Tenerife. From the icy world of Planet Penguin (complete with real snow) to the dazzling AquaViva jellyfish display and the breathtaking Coral Kingdom.
It’s somewhere that takes animal conservation seriously. In fact, the Loro Parque Foundation funds projects around the world, and their recent “baby boom” with new orcas, dolphins, sea lions, sloths and capybaras is proof of how well the animals thrive here.
Enjoy some water fun at Siam Park
Think water parks are just for kids? Think again! Siam Park has been named the Best Water Park in the World multiple times by TripAdvisor. Not only does it offer an amazing mix of thrill and relaxation, it’s also visually stunning, with elements drawn from Thai architecture.
There are a range of activities, some suitable for adrenaline addicts while others are best for younger kids.

Feeling brave? Take on The Tower of Power, a near-vertical water slide that shoots you through a shark-filled aquarium tunnel, is guaranteed to get your heart racing. Love waves? Visit the Wave Palace, which boasts the world’s largest artificial waves, reaching up to 3 metres high. Personally, I love the Lazy River, which stretches for 1km and is one of the longest in the world.
If you want to make the most of your day at Siam Park, I’d recommend booking a Fast Pass so you can skip the queues, or treat yourself to a VIP cabin for a more luxurious experience.
Enjoy the views from Mount Teide
Looking to add a bit of magic to your Tenerife trip? How about stargazing above the clouds on Mount Teide! At a height of 3,718 metres, this volcano is the highest point in Spain.
You can hop on the cable car to the top, and from there, you’ll see the beauty unfold. Whether you want to catch the sunset over the clouds, or enjoy a stargazing tour at the top, there’s plenty to enjoy. Just remember, it can get chilly at the top, so bring some layers.

Hike the Masca Ravine
Head to the Teno Mountains in the northeast part of Tenerife, and you’ll discover the incredible Masca Ravine (Barranco de Masca). There’s a 4km trek along the ravine from the little village of Masca to the sea. It’s steep though, so not one to take on unless you’re relatively fit. Research the trek before you visit, as it does close from time to time for safety reasons.
Swim in Tenerife’s natural pools
Did you know Tenerife is home to beautiful natural pools? Similar to Mexico’s magical cenotes, Tenerife’s pools have been created by lava flows reaching the sea. The result? Sparkling rock pools which make for a magical swimming experience. One of the most popular locations is El Caletón de Garachico, close to San Miguel Castle. Others to add to your list include Charco de La Laja, Bajamar pool and Charco del Viento.

Explore the forests of Anaga Rural Park
You might associate Tenerife with sunshine-filled beach holidays, but there’s plenty to enjoy away from the coast too. Anaga Rural Park is home to pretty laurel forests, which look like something from an enchanting fairy story. Hike the Sendero de los Sentidos (Path of the Senses) and you’ll explore magical moss-covered trees, ferns and discover secret viewpoints. It’s somewhere surprising and definitely one of the most unique things to do in Tenerife.
Discover the culture of La Laguna
There’s no denying that there are areas of Tenerife which are built up, with large resorts, nightclubs and shops. So, if you’re craving a more authentic, cultural experience, I’d recommend a trip to UNESCO World Heritage Site, La Laguna. Here, you’ll discover colourful colonial houses, cobbled streets and pretty courtyards. It’s a town that’s filled with charm, and a great place to snap some photos.
Enjoy a traditional Canarian meal
Have you heard of a guachinche? I hadn’t before I visited the island! These are traditional restaurants serving homemade Canarian food. They’re often family-run and quite rustic, with a special charm. They’re usually open from October to April, to coincide with the wine harvest, as they also sell their own wines.
Menus tend to be quite basic, with dishes such as grilled pork, papas arrugadas (the famous Canarian potatoes!) and mojo sauce.

You’ll discover most guachinches are in the north of Tenerife, with my favourites being Guachinche Los Gómez, Mi Guachinche Casa Pedro and Guachinche Pa’ Picar.
Visit Icod de los Vinos
The main attraction in this charming town in the north of Tenerife is Drago Milenario. No, it’s not a dragon, it’s a dragon tree and well, it’s pretty huge! It’s over 16 metres tall and measures around 20 metres around the base. It’s thought to be over 800 years old and is a lovely icon to see. You can plan a day around seeing the tree and surrounding gardens, enjoying a coffee nearby or enjoying a traditional meal. The town also offers amazing views to Mount Teide.

Kayak past Los Gigantes
One of my favourite experiences in Tenerife is kayaking past the amazing cliffs of Los Gigantes. The scale is just vast, with the towering rocks rising around 600 metres above the sea. It’s a trip best done in the morning, when the seas are calmer. This is such a unique experience to have in Tenerife, and one you will remember for many years to come!

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about these special and unique things to do in Tenerife. It’s such an amazing and varied island, and so much more than a beach destination. I love that you can spend a morning exploring volcanic craters, then enjoy the thrills of a water park in the afternoon. Whatever you decide to do, I hope you have an amazing time!
