Aruba
Aruba is a paradise island in the Caribbean

I’ve always loved how varied my Caribbean holidays have been. You can spend the morning relaxing on a beautiful beach, enjoy a seafood lunch on the sand, then head up a mountain I the afternoon or see dolphins from a boat tour. I also love the relaxed vibe in the Caribbean. From the moment you land, you know you won’t be rushing anywhere!

In my guide I’ll share my favourite areas on the island, including the popular resort areas of Palm Beach, Aruba’s colourful capital, Oranjestad  and the lesser-visited Baby Beach. The tricky part? Actually deciding where to stay!

Where to Stay in Aruba

Palm Beach – Best for First-Time Visitors and Families

If you’re visiting Aruba for the first time, Palm Beach is an excellent place to start. Located on the island’s northwest coast, this popular stretch of coastline is known for its beautiful white-sand beach, calm turquoise waters and abundance of restaurants, bars and activities.

It’s one of Aruba’s main tourist areas, so you’ll find plenty to keep you entertained. You could spend your days swimming, trying water sports or sampling local cuisine in one of the beachfront restaurants.

It’s a great location if you don’t want to hire a car, as so much is within a short walk. There’s something lovely about being able to wander out for dinner without having to plan an entire evening around getting there.

Best for: First-time visitors, families, couples and anyone who enjoys having plenty of restaurants, entertainment and activities close by.

Eagle Beach – Best for Couples and Relaxation

For a more laid-back beach holiday, Eagle Beach is one of the most beautiful places to stay in Aruba. This area is famous for its soft white sand, crystal-clear water and iconic divi-divi trees. It’s often named one of the Caribbean’s most spectacular beaches.

If you’re a couple looking for romantic Aruba hotels, Eagle Beach is the perfect choice. Compared to Palm Beach it’s quieter and more relaxed. I’d recommend checking out the 5-star JOIA Aruba by Iberostar. It’s a great place to base yourselves, with its infinity pools, spa and numerous restaurants.

Oranjestad – Best for Culture, Shopping and Sightseeing

If you’re keen to explore Aruba’s history and culture, how about staying in the island’s colourful capital, Oranjestad? The city offers a very different style of trip a beach resort. With its distinctive Dutch-Caribbean architecture, pastel-coloured buildings and waterfront setting, it’s got a lovely vibe.

The city has plenty of shops, local markets and restaurants making it a good base. Just remember, it’s where the cruise ships dock so it can get busy!

Noord and Malmok – Best for Snorkelling

Located north of Palm Beach, Noord and the neighbouring Malmok area offer a slightly different experience. While Noord includes residential neighbourhoods, restaurants and holiday accommodation, Malmok is known for its amazing snorkelling.

This part of Aruba is ideal for anyone who wants to spend time exploring the island’s underwater world. The coastline features rocky coves, clear waters and several popular snorkelling spots, including Boca Catalina. You’ll also be within easy reach of Aruba’s northern coast, including Arashi Beach and California Lighthouse.

Santa Cruz and Arikok – Best for Nature and Adventure

If you’d prefer to experience Aruba’s natural beauty rather than spend every day on the beach, consider staying around Santa Cruz. From here you’ll be able to visit Arikok National Park, which covers approximately 20% of Aruba. You’ll be amazed by this park’s natural wonders, which include desert landscapes, rugged coastlines, amazing natural pools, caves and wildlife.

I think this area is best if you’re an adventure lover, looking for hikes and treks to see the island’s beauty. It’s a great reminder that although Aruba is known for its beaches, there’s so much more to see.

San Nicolas and Baby Beach – Best for a Quieter, Local Experience

Head to the southern end of Aruba and you’ll reach San Nicolas. Known as the island’s cultural capital, it’s got more of a traditional feel and has lots of colourful street art.

If you stay here, you could also visit Baby Beach. This beautiful crescent-shaped lagoon has shallow, calm turquoise water. I’d recommend it to families, as it’s a nice safe spot for little ones.

Baby Beach, Aruba
Baby Beach is a lesser-visited beach in Aruba

I always think it’s worth venturing away from the main tourist areas on a trip like this. Finding somewhere a little quieter like this will give you a more rounded view of the island.

Best things to do:

  • Spend the day swimming and snorkelling at Baby Beach.
  • Explore San Nicolas’s colourful street art.
  • Discover local restaurants and Caribbean food.
  • Visit nearby Rodgers Beach.
  • Enjoy the quieter southern coastline.

Best for: Families, snorkelling enthusiasts, adventurous travellers and anyone looking for a more relaxed, local experience.

Where Is the Best Place to Stay in Aruba?

As you’ve read, there are plenty of gorgeous spots to choose from. The best area to stay in Aruba depends on the type of holiday you’re planning. If you’re visiting for the first time, Palm Beach is great as you’ll have everything you need on the doorstep. If you’re planning a romantic trip and want the paradise views without big crowds, you might prefer staying in this Iberostar beachfront resort on Eagle Beach. Or, for a more cultural holiday, spend time in Oranjestad or San Nicolas.

My favourite Caribbean holidays have always had a lovely mix of beaches, food, nature and culture, so my recommendation? Split your trip between two destinations. You’ll get a bit of everything and enjoy a truly memorable getaway.
